3D printing with robotics is reaching an unprecedented level of maturity both in the market and at a technological level. This paper discusses current applications of large-scale robotics applied to 3D printed real-scale final parts for the construction and product design industries, including state-of-the-art methodologies, technologies and applications. Furthermore, an in-depth view of technologies and applications developed by the author will be provided, including robot-end effector integration and the automated generation of machine code through an ad-hoc computer aided design to computer aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) integration. This integration accounts for parametric capabilities and design-time feedback. Consequently, advances in the seamlessly integrated design-to-manufacturing workflow will be presented: (i) design (by means of employing parametric modeling software), (ii) geometry analysis (by means of ad-hoc machine manufacturing process simulations), (iii) CAD-CAM integration (by means of automated geometry processing and machine code generation), and (iv) manufacturing and testing (by combining 6-axis robots and large-scale plastic extruders).

Abstract3D concrete printing (3DCP) technology is a construction method that offers a unique combination of automation and customization. However, when the printing area goes large, generating the print path becomes a sophisticated work. That’s because the customized print path should not only be expandable but also printable, such rules are hard to follow as both the printing area and construction requirements increase. In this paper, the Shenzhen Baoan 3D Printing Park project serves as a case study to introduce space-filling and print path generation methods for three types of large-area concrete pavement. The space-filling methods utilize geometry-based rules to generate complex and expandable paving patterns, while the print path generation methods utilize construction-oriented rules to convert these patterns into print paths. The research provides easy-to-operate design and programming workflows to achieve a pavement printing area of 836 sqm, which significantly increases the construction scale of large-format additive manufacturing (LFAM) and shows the potential of 3D printing technology to reach non-standard results by using standard workflows.

Mass customization of prefabricated architecture is becoming increasingly crucial for developing the architectural industry. Advanced technologies such as 3D printing and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) has brought opportunities and challenges for traditional fabrication and construction methodology. Based on these emerging digital design tools and intelligent construction methods, this paper presents a novel methodology for fabricating single-layer 3D printing panels using UAV positioning technology, which has the potential to revolutionize the construction process and enhance the overall efficiency. This paper first provides a comprehensive review of the existing technologies in 3D printing and UAV positioning, highlighting their benefits and limitations in the context of construction applications. Next, a step-by-step process for fabricating single-layer 3D printing panels is introduced, detailing the optimal design parameters, material selection, and printing techniques. The utilization of UAV for precise positioning and alignment of the panels is then discussed, including the development of an on-site installation for accurate control. To validate the proposed method, a construction practice of the Chengdu Agricultural Expo Centre is produced o demonstrate the promising manufacturing and installation of single-layer 3D printed panels using UAV positioning technology. The results indicate that this method significantly reduces construction time, material waste, and labour costs, while also demonstrating significant customization and design flexibility.
