Abstract:The use of biomass resources to generate energy has been growing as renewable alternative, foremost because of their promising properties. Nowadays, one of the newest alternative resources under study is the biomass from shortrotation forests. However, such process lacks development to be used in commercial scale in Brazil, despite its positive perspectives. The aim of the present study is to chemically characterize Eucalyptus sp. residues, in order to find their potential applicability as sustainable fuel. The material was collected in short-rotation forests in Taiobeiras, Minas Gerais State. Two treatments were tested, namely: residues collected in the harvester (T1) and 40-day-dried soil residues (T2). Firstly, the volatile matter and the ash content were analyzed in triplicate to determine the fixed carbon content. The results were 1.35%, 79.35% and 19.3%, in T1; and 1.30%, 80.60% and 19.2%, in T2, respectively. The extractive levels were 15.88%, in T1; and 12.37%, in T2. The lignin values reached 17.12% and 20%, in T1 and T2, respectively. The holocellulose a d α-cellulose levels were recorded and the hemicellulose level was found using the difference between the holocellulose a d α-ellulose alues. The holo ellulose ea hed .9 %, i T ; a d . %, i T ; he eas the α-cellulose presented values such as 40.64%, in T1; and 36.22%, in T2. Therefore, the hemicellulose content was 25.30% and 25.12%, in T1 and T2, respectively. Lastly, the calorific power levels were 18132.5 J/g and 18175.0 J/g, in T1 and T2, results that may be related to the chemical composition of short rotation timber.Keywords: Bioenergy; Lignin; extractives. ResumoO uso da biomassa para a geração de energia tem crescido como uma fonte renovável alternativa, especialmente devido à suas propriedades promissoras. Hoje em dia, um dos mais novos recursos alternativos em estudo é a biomassa de florestas de curta rotação. No entanto, este processo carece de desenvolvimento para ser usado em escala comercial no Brasil, apesar de suas perspectivas positivas. Este trabalho teve como objetivo caracterizar quimicamente resíduos de Eucalyptus sp. de curta rotação para determinar seu potencial como combustível renovável. Em Taiobeiras, Estado de Minas Gerais, foram coletados os resíduos de coleta mecanizada -colheitadeira -(Tratamento T1) e os resíduos depostos no solo (Tratamento T2) para secagem durante 40 dias. Realizou-se a análise imediata das amostras em triplicata para determinar teor de cinzas, voláteis e o teor de carbono fixo, resultando, respectivamente, 1,35%, 79,35% e 19,3% para T1; 1,30%, 80,60% e 19,2% para T2. Os valores de extrativos encontrados para T1 e T2 foram 15,88% e 12,37%, respectivamente. Para lignina, os valores encontrados foram de 17,12% para T1 e 20% para T2. Co-Combustion Characteristics and Kinetic Analyses of Biomass Briquette and Municipal Solid Waste in N2/O2 and CO2/O2 Atmospheres

The thermal behavior of cotton straw briquette (CSB), municipal solid waste (MSW), and their blends was investigated using a thermogravimetric analyzer under N2/O2 and CO2/O2 atmospheres at 20 °C/min from an ambient temperature to 1000 °C. The kinetics and synergistic interaction between MSW and CSB in the co-combustion process were evaluated. The results indicated that MSW blended with CSB improved the ignition and burnout characteristics of the blends, while decreasing the comprehensive combustion characteristics index. The suitable proportions of CSB were less than 60% and 40% separately under 80N2/20O2 and 80CO2/20O2 atmospheres, respectively. The inhibitory effect of CO2 induced burnout temperature and residual mass increased, and the high-temperature stage reaction varied. Kinetic analysis of the blends indicated that blending with CSB could promote MSW combustion in the first reaction stage, while the second and third decomposition stages were complicated because of the synergistic interaction between MSW and CSB in the co-combustion process. The nth order reaction model fit the mass loss of theca-combustion process for the blends very well.

This study was done to determine the effects of beech sawdust torrefaction on pellets obtained in the laboratory. Torrefied beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) sawdust was used to make pellets. This species was chosen based on the existence of a market for such micro-briquettes. Rigorous comparisons between torrefied and non-torrefied pellets were conducted. It was found that treating the sawdust had both beneficial and non-beneficial effects, but the total effect is positive. Economical elements were also considered, emphasizing the use of wood biomass as fuel. Theoretical and experimental aspects are taken into consideration, the experimental results being used to validate the theoretical model. The experiments performed demonstrate that heat treatment can add value if it meets certain parameters, such as a maximum temperature of 260 °C for 5 min. Heat treatment of beech sawdust in the form of pellets or briquettes was shown to be a simple, viable, effective treatment because the heating process improves the calorific value and other relevant properties of the torrefied sawdust.
