In this study, a techno-economic analysis for a 3.75 kW biomass gasification power generation system (BMPGS) was conducted by exploiting available biomass resources such as rice husk, coconut shell, and rubber shell as feedstock. Payback time (PBT), net present value (NPV), and life cycle cost are the economic criteria that are delivered by an economic model for a BMPGS. Experimental results obtained on the technical parameters of a BMPGS, show that the rubber shell operated BMPGS has the highest overall efficiency (15.5%), maximum diesel savings (48%), and least biomass consumption (3.3 kg/h). Even though the capital cost of the producer gas driven dual fuel CI engine is higher than the standalone diesel genset power production system, it has the lowest running cost and cost savings per year, making it an excellent choice for power generation in remote locations. The rubber shell operated BMPGS system show a minimum PBT of 2.9 years which is desirable as the cost for installation of the proposed system can be regained within a short period of time. A positive NPV of Rs. 3,90,000 is attained for rubber shell, which clearly indicates in acceptance of rubber shell as biomass feedstock for BMPGS. The sensitivity analysis proves that the uncertainty in input parameters such as the cost of a biomass gasifier, dual fuel VCR engine, labor cost, and the cost of biomass feedstock influence the output parameters of the capital cost, operating cost, and PBT.

The fermentation of syngas is an attractive technology that can be integrated with gasification of lignocellulosic biomass. The coupling of these two technologies allows for treating a great variety of raw materials. Lignin usually hinders microbial fermentations; thus, the thermal decomposition of the whole material into small molecules allows for the production of fuels and other types of molecules using syngas as substrate, a process performed at mild conditions. Syngas contains mainly hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide in varying proportions. These gases have a low volumetric energy density, resulting in a more interesting conversion into higher energy density molecules. Syngas can be transformed by microorganisms, thus avoiding the use of expensive catalysts, which may be subject to poisoning. However, the fermentation is not free of suffering from inhibitory problems. The presence of trace components in syngas may cause a decrease in fermentation yields or cause a complete cessation of bacteria growth. The presence of tar and hydrogen cyanide are just examples of this fermentation’s challenges. Syngas cleaning impairs significant restrictions in technology deployment. The technology may seem promising, but it is still far from large-scale application due to several aspects that still need to find a practical solution.

Bamboo is abundantly available in India, particularly in the North East regions which can provide a significant energy opportunity in this region. The physicochemical and thermal properties of bamboo species originate from different places are distinct. This study investigates the pyrolysis of 20 different bamboo species from North East regions of India in a thermogravimetric analyser (TGA) at four different heating rates of 10, 20, 30, and 40 K/min. Enormous kinetic and thermodynamic data are presented for 20 varieties of bamboo species. Model‐free kinetic methods are used to calculate the kinetic parameters and their values are compared. The average activation energy of all bamboo species is estimated in the range 145.59–219.15 kJ/mol from the Starink method, the method recommended by International Confederation of Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry (ICTAC). Generalized master plot method is used for the determination of reaction mechanism which reveals that most of the bamboo species follow the second‐order reaction model (F2) during their thermal degradation. The thermodynamic parameters reveal that the pyrolysis process of all bamboo species is endothermic and it reaches near to the thermodynamic equilibrium.
