Sustainable Italian Cities: The Added Value of Biomethane from Organic Waste

This work focuses on the profitability of biomethane plants and the environmental benefits obtained recovering the organic fraction of municipal solid waste in Italy. The economic model is based on the calculations of the net present value, considering multiple capacities of biomethane production (ranging from 50 to 500 m3/h) and alternative scenarios based on the variation in subsidies, the selling price of biomethane, and the net revenues from the treatment of organic waste. The environmental analysis quantifies the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions obtained by natural gas vehicles fueled by biomethane. The economic and environmental results encourage energy change that can be achieved by municipalities that support the transformation of natural resources into green fuels. Across 15 Italian municipalities, the potential biomethane production varies from 80.4 million m3/year to 102.8 million m3/year, with an overall net present value ranging from 135 to 187 million €. In addition, the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions varies from 127 to 162 thousand-ton CO2eq/year. Both the economic and environmental results demonstrate that biomethane is a renewable resource with added value for municipalities.

Every year the interest in biofuels, including biomethane, grows in Poland. Biomethane, obtained from biogas, is widely used in the Polish economy; the most important two applications are as gas injected into the gas grid and as automotive fuel. The aim of this work is to determine the potential for the development of the biomethane sector in Poland. The following article presents the technological stages of biomethane extraction and purification. The investment process for biogas/biomethane installation is presented in the form of a Gannt chart; this process is extremely long in Poland, with a duration of three years. In the coming months, the Polish Oil Mining and Gas Extraction will begin to invest in biomethane, which will be connected to the gas grid, while the Polish oil refiner and petrol retailer, Orlen, will invest in biomethane to be used as automotive fuel. This article includes a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) and PEST (Political, Economic, Social, Technological) analysis of the biogas/biomethane sector in Poland. The main barriers to the development of the biogas/biomethane sector in Poland are high investment costs, long lead times and a strong conventional energy lobby. The most important advantages of biogas/biomethane technology in Poland include environmental aspects, high biomethane potential and well-developed agriculture. The development of biogas/biomethane technology in Poland will slowly reduce environmental pollution, reduce carbon dioxide emissions and allow for partial independence from the importing of natural gas.

In the article, a short review of possible biogas applications is presented. It is shown that biogas/biomethane can be used in many different ways. In particular, the following applications of biomethane are discussed: (1) as a transport fuel, (2) as a perspective heating fuel for the biofuel industry, (3) as feedstock to produce conventional motor fuels, and (4) as a valuable raw material for other branches of industry. For each use, the requirements and advantages of biogas/biomethane sustainability are discussed. In cases where biomethane is used as a transport fuel or as feedstock for the production of conventional motor fuels, meeting sustainability criteria and certification is legally required. In the other cases, a recipient's standards may be stricter than legal requirements in terms of sustainability, for example when biomethane is used as a heating fuel at a biofuel production plant in order to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the processing stage. Increasing the possibility of feeding biomethane into the natural gas grid would allow for the provision of bio-feedstock to other industries that use methane as a raw material, and would make the production of other goods more eco-friendly. In the article, different models of integrating biogas plants with the biofuel and fuel industries are presented. Due to the fact that sustainability aspects are vital from the certification point of view, these aspects are also discussed. In Poland, biogas plants currently operate mainly to produce electricity, but some entities deliver both heat and electricity (in the cogeneration case). In order to make biomethane a more common raw material or heating fuel, there is a need to feed it into the natural gas grid. This article briefly discusses the challenges that the biogas industry has to overcome in order to allow this material to become more widely used.
