Feasibility of using intermediate x‐ray energies for highly conformal extracranial radiotherapy

Abstract: The authors showed the feasibility of using flattening filter free 2 MV x-rays for extracranial treatments as evidenced by equivalent or superior dosimetry compared to 6 MV plans using the same inverse noncoplanar intensity modulated planning method.

“…The observed radiosensitizing effect comes from increased fraction of low energy electrons (photoelectrons and Auger electrons) at the vicinity of gold nanoparticles4243. Therefore, this multi-scale modeling approach will be very useful for understanding the potential influence on biological effects of investigations involving energy spectrum alteration, such as low-Z target switching technique in the gold nanoparticle radiotherapy44 or the applications of lower MV photon beams in therapy or imaging fields4045.…”

“…Aperture statistics for the RAO and DMS methods for the seven cases. has far fewer and thicker moving leaves than the conventional MLC, allowing it to be further miniaturized to for compact Linac head designs 24 and small animal irradiators. An effective way to reduce the Linac head size is by moving the beam intensity modulator closer to the X-ray source.…”

“…The column generation approach was successfully retooled for noncoplanar beam angle selection. [3][4][5][6]29,30 The advantage of column generation, besides being efficient to solve large scale optimization problems, is to be able to integrate fluence optimization into the triplet selection. Instead of relying on human operators to select the triplet orientations, the computerized beam orientation identified optimal triplets that may seem unintuitive to human operators.…”
