Feasibility of using death certificates for studying place of death in Latin America

Abstract: Objective. This paper assesses the availability and quality of death certificate data in Latin America and the feasibility of using these data to study place of death and associated factors. Methods. In this comparative study, we collected examples of current official death certificates and digital data files containing information about all deaths that occurred during 1 year in 19 Latin American countries. Data were collected from June 2019 to May 2020. The records for place of death and associated variable… Show more

“…The quality of DC data and the availability and completeness of the variables in the country databases is limited. In a previous quality assessment, we found the databases of El Salvador and Peru to be of low quality because in El Salvador, a high percentage of the underlying causes of death were coded to unspecific/ill-defined conditions, while in Peru, mortality registration was considered incomplete [ 18 ]. Certain variables had high rates of missing values: PoD was missing in 25.5% in Peru.…”

“…A previous analysis considered the included DC data comparable (ie, containing most of the variables analysed) and of acceptable quality: high quality in three countries, medium quality in seven, and low quality in two. More details on this data collection and its resources can be found elsewhere [ 18 ].…”

“…20 The reasons for these findings remain unclear. Although epidemiological-data registration is good functioning, mainly in death certificates, with quality and high completeness reported, 21 in data on prevalence, DALY rates are subject to restrictions, such as data sources quality. Some researchers remarked on fragmentation and decentralization in providing good healthcare services in Argentina's health system.…”

“…This study strengths include the use of high-quality whole population data from Chile and Brazil, and moderate-quality data from Peru 24 . The information about place of death presented in death certificates is complete and accurate, providing high-quality data for our analyses 24 , 25 . Furthermore, the coverage of death registrations in Brazil and Chile is close to 100% 26 .…”
