“…A simple surgical drainage system (Figures 5 and 6 ) was used in the postoperative period. In our experience, air leaks resulting from decortication usually resolved by the 2nd postoperative day in many of these patients, as we have already published [ 10 ]. A formal system for postoperative pleural drainage is not readily available in Cameroon and our hospital was not equipped with a wall suction device.…”

“…[ 1 2 4 6 7 ] Massive purulent pericarditishave become a rare disease, since we have reported 41 cases oflife-threateningempyema in children treated surgically by decortication and none was complicated with pericarditis. [ 8 ] Pericarditis itself is not uncommon in Africa, most of these infections are chronic and secondary to tuberculosis, the main risk factor remains immunodepression as found in acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.…”

“…There was bleeding of moderate volume due to the decortication. Only one drain was left in place, and the simple drainage system that we have reported was used, which uses respiratory movements and gravity [ 5 ]. The drainage system was left open on the first day and converted to a closed system 3 days after the surgery.…”
