Feasibility of a pulsed sequencing batch reactor with anaerobic aggregated biomass for the treatment of low strength wastewaters

Abstract: This study concerns an assessment of a SBR operation that associates anaerobic aggregated biomass with a pulsed action during the reaction phase, a system named Pulsed Sequencing Batch Reactor (P-SBR). The system uses a diaphragm pump as a pulsator unit to increase the liquid-solid contact, in order to avoid dead zones and possible external mass transfer resistance. A preliminary study of the operation of the reactor was performed with a low strength synthetic wastewater with a COD near 1000 mg.1−1 and a sub-o… Show more

“…The necessary mixing can be provided by circulation of the biogas produced (Sung & Dague, 1995). However, for low strength wastewater the biogas production is insufficient and an alternative mixing may be necessary (Brito et al, 1997). Circulation of the bulk liquid through a pump (Hirl & Irvine, 1996;Brito et al, 1997) or mechanical agitation (Ratusznei et al, 2000) can also be used.…”

“…For instance, as found by Wu [12], flow field of mechanical stirring is the best, followed by pneumatic stirring, next to hydraulic stirring by CFD simulation. Michelan et al [13] experimentally studied that the backflow mixing using biogas produced by the system is more effective than other mixing methods, though unstable, which might result from poor backflow mixing effect of low biogas yield from the system, as stated by Brito [14]. Lee [15] experimentally proved that the linear increases the pressure of pneumatic stirring, but the volumetric biogas producing rate remains around 1.…”
