Feasibility Demonstration of Terrestrial RNP with LDACS

Abstract: In this paper we discuss the first results from a set of flight experiments. The objective was to show that terrestrial ranging can support aviation services with sufficient accuracy for non-precision approach. The experimental setup is based on using LDACS signals to provide pseudorange measurements. The data analysis reveals that the position solutions are compliant with RNP 1 standards. We also propose the feasibility of RNP 0.3 using LDACS as terrestrial ranging.

“…Moreover, an air-to-air mode of LDACS is being researched on with the goal of extending LDACS coverage to the airspace that cannot be directly covered by ground stations [24], [25]. The navigation performance achievable using LDACS was measured in previous flight trials [26], [27]. Those flight trials focused solely on the LDACS navigation performance and employed GSs only capable of transmitting and an AS only capable of receiving.…”

“…The analyses of this work are based on measurements made during nine flights performed between the 9 th and 13 th of July 2018 (Osechas et al, 2019) The analyses of this paper only focus on the flight sections for which barometric pressure measurements were available. Each of these sections covers most of each flight, with the exception of short intervals at the initial and final portions of the flights.…”

“…The LDACS transmitters provide signals that can be used for navigation (i.e. RAS) with the results from a flight test evaluating LDACS RAS-based navigation presented in [25]. The use of LDACS for navigation is an ongoing effort.…”
