“…, 18 To date, no study was found carried out in the Brazilian pediatric population that aimed to evaluate the influence of obesity on lung volume and capacity. Perhaps this lack of information at the national level is because there are few body plethysmographs in the country, as well as the high cost of the equipment and also the fact that it is harder to obtain a satisfactory test in a pediatric sample 26. Most studies used SensorMedics equipment17 , 19 , 20 and all of them normalized of lung volume results through the percentage of predicted,17 - 20 although a study did not report the equation used 18…”

“…These findings are similar to those found in various studies that evaluated the lung function success rates in the pediatric population, showing that as the children grow older, the success rate also rises. 21 , 23 , 24 Previous studies that aimed at generating normality values for the respiratory muscle strength test ascribe the failure of the technique to the difficulty in understanding, low reproducibility and lack of cooperation by the children in this age group. 13 , 14 However, these studies have not demonstrated success rates separately by age groups, hindering a better knowledge and understanding of the age as an influencing factor on this outcome.…”

“…It was reported that the use of trained evaluators and a laboratory adapted to children increases the success of spirometry in this age group 23 . The use of incentives of animation and the previous training of the spirometry maneuver by employing a plastic bottle filled with water and a straw with the same diameter of the mouthpiece for simulation of expiration before the test may have contributed to explain our high success rate in the two groups evaluated [27][28][29] .…”

“…Recently, a literature review 2 showed that the success rate in the preschool age group varied between 71-92% in various regions of the world, corroborating our results in this age group evaluated, 76%. Similarly, other studies that evaluated the applicability of spirometry test in the school age group showed a success rate of approximately 90% 4,29,31 , with spirometry measurements performed by a team previously trained and experienced with children. It was reported that the use of trained evaluators and a laboratory adapted to children increases the success of spirometry in this age group 23 .…”
