The education sector is one of the contributors to greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, the education sector strongly supports the government’s aspirations to reduce carbon emissions. Energy consumption is related to the amount of carbon emission production—energy consumption information helps to forecast energy savings while creating carbon emission reduction. The research aims to propose a new modeling of rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) by installing the Net Energy Metering (NEM) meter in the Politeknik Sultan Azlan Shah (PSAS) educational institution's ring distribution system. The energy demand at PSAS in 2022 is 3,916,534 kWh/year, equivalent to an energy cost of RM 1,429,535. The new model design is based on setting 20% of the total power supply in PSAS generated by solar. A feasibility analysis on the proposed modification of the distribution layout design found that in the next four years, it is predicted that the minimum energy savings that PSAS will obtain are 2,075,763 kWh, while the annual bill savings are RM 757,654. This energy saving leads to a reduction in gas emissions where PSAS can reduce the production of 1,526,620 kg of CO2 to the environment while saving 38,165 mature trees from being cut down.

Energy is one of the basic inputs and driving forces for economic and social development modernization. Sustainable energy supply is one of the major challenges in the modern world. Sustainable energy supply can be obtained through alternative energy sources, and efficient energy use is a high priority to optimize the environmental impact. This paper investigates the potential for energy savings involving five end-load equipment in academic institutions. The saving potential is obtained through energy efficiency analysis and feasibility analysis of the solar power generation systems. An energy audit is conducted on end-use consuming equipment (i.e., fans, lights, air conditioning, ICT equipment, etc.) in these five end-load sectors to find out the major energy-consuming equipment, energy consumption, and potential energy savings. The analysis of energy consumption per equipment helps determine the appropriate type of equipment to be upgraded and replaced for energy saving. The feasibility of rooftop solar power generation has been also analysed to integrate into the energy end load. The research findings confirm that laboratory equipment, lighting, and air conditioning are vital to energy consumption in academic buildings. The energy savings, bill savings, and carbon emissions reductions have been estimated based on integrating rooftop solar power generation. The feasibility analysis of onsite energy generation using a hybrid solar system found that the total energy-saving potential and bill savings within five years are 311,131 kWh and RM 113,563, respectively. This value refers to comprehensive energy-saving and bill for all academic buildings involved in this research.

Assessing the Potential of Implementing a Solar-Based Distributed Energy System for a University Using the Campus Bus Stops

Large educational facilities hold great potential for the implementation of solar-based distributed energy systems. The aim of this paper is to present a prototype and an assessment of a solar-based bus shelter photovoltaic system intended to be implemented at a campus scale that serves as an energy-distributed system. The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), a campus with an area of 7.3 km2 and bus stops’ roof area availability of around 1100 m2 was selected as a case study. The proposed system, apart from considering on-site generation, also considers an increase in end-use services such as the installation of television screens for information, charging docks, surveillance cameras, internet service, and lighting. For the assessment, a load facility survey and an estimation of the baseline energy use was conducted based on two demand use conditions, corresponding to 12 and 24 h for different archetypical stations. It was found that the baseline annual energy consumption for all the bus stops represents from 55–111 MWh. In this paper, an initial prototype of a solar-based bus shelter PV system is presented, and an assessment is carried out to understand its potential application at a large scale. The analysis shows that energy use in the retrofitted stations would rise to 167 MWh/year; however, apart from covering on-site demand, the system has the capacity to generate an additional 175 MWh, feeding nearby university buildings. It is calculated that the system could save around 130 t CO2e annually. The economic analysis shows that the project has a discounted payback (DPB) of almost 9 years and an internal rate of return (IRR) of 5.9%; however, in scenarios where renewable generation and carbon incentives are applied, this improves the project’s DPB to 6 years and the IRR to 13%.
