Feasibility Analysis and Development of Stand-Alone Hybrid Power Generation System for Remote Areas: A Case Study of Ethiopian Rural Area

Abstract: : This paper proposed a standalone solar/wind/micro-hydro hybrid power generation system to electrify Ethiopian remote areas that are far from the national utility grid. The aim is that it will lead to the development of renewable energy sources, using a hybrid optimization model for energy renewables (HOMER) as an optimization and sensitivity tool and MATLAB as a design tool. The system uses 100% renewable energy. This system incorporated solar photo-voltaic (PV), wind turbines, micro-hydro systems, and batte… Show more

“…In many literature, hybrid RE system backed up with energy storage has been analyzed for its suitability in a particular region [10][11][12]. Most of the research work focuses on the supply of power to residential, rural areas and institutions [13][14][15][16]. The industrial sectors have been provided little attention to cater the socio economic development of the whole region.…”

“…The results show that in terms of cost and pollution savings, PV/biogas/battery systems outperform PV/diesel/battery and diesel-only systems [11]. Endeshaw Solomon Bayu et al conducted a study to incorporate wind turbines, micro-hydro systems, solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, and battery systems to check the feasibility of hybrid systems to electrify the remote place [12]. Paul et al examined the economic viability and feasibility of utilizing a hybrid-electricity system in rural areas.…”

“…Wind and solar energy are particularly viable options for reducing carbon emissions and making the world safer and cleaner [4][5][6]. Renewable energy resources in Ethiopia, including solar [7][8][9], biomass [10,11], wind [12][13][14], and hybrid renewable energy sources [15,16], have recently undergone assessments in order to develop cleaner power generation and contribute to the energy security of this developing country in East Africa.…”
