Fear of hypoglycemia: Influence on glycemic variability and self-management behavior in young adults with type 1 diabetes

Abstract: Purpose The purpose of this study was to examine how fear of hypoglycemia (FOH) is associated with glycemic variability (GV) and self-management behavior in young adults (aged 18–35) with type 1 diabetes (T1DM). Procedures Using a prospective repeated-measures design, in 35 young adults, within- and between-person and temporal associations of FOH, specific self-management behaviors, and GV were measured. The data were collected using questionnaires and real-time measures using daily diaries, insulin pump dow… Show more

“…However, the percentage of younger individuals with T1D with a weight problem is higher than those without diabetes, indicating the presence of additional mechanisms. For example, repeated hypoglycaemia or even the fear of hypoglycaemia results in maladaptive eating habits that favour the development of obesity . Peripheral insulin resistance precipitated by subcutaneous insulin administration rather than the physiological portal vein delivery, is another additional factor in the development of DD .…”

“…Those with greater FOH have reported more frequent nocturnal hypoglycaemia (Anderbro et al., ) and greater sleep disruption due to waking to monitor blood glucose levels (Tanenbaum & Gonzalez, ). FOH has also been found to be associated with greater GV in a time‐dependent relationship, with FOH preceding heightened GV (Martyn‐Nemeth et al., ).…”
