Fe2 Pairs as Structural Units in the Indides RE12Fe2In3 (RE = Ho, Er, Tm, Lu)

Abstract: The indides RE 12 Fe 2 In 3 (RE ϭ Ho, Er, Tm, Lu) have been prepared by arc-melting the elements and subsequent annealing. All compounds were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction and the Er 12 Fe 2 In 3 structure was refined from X-ray single crystal data: I4/mmm, a ϭ 958.8(1), c ϭ 957.8(1) pm, wR2 ϭ 0.0629, 412 F 2 values and 22 variables. The 2a site shows In/Fe mixing, leading to the composition Er 12 Fe 2.31 In 2.69 for the investigated crystal. The structure (new type) derives from a Cu

“…The composition of samples, the reflection intensities and the calculated lattice parameters confirm that compounds crystallize in the Er 12 Fe 2 In 3 structure type (space group I4/mmm, Pearson code tI34). Crystal data and details of the structure refinements for the Tm 12 [3]. Final positions of the atoms and their thermal parameters for RE 12 Fe 2+x Pb 3−x (RE = Tm, Lu) are listed in Table 2.…”

“…The compounds with the Sm 12 Ni 6 In structure type were revealed in some RE-{Co, Ni}-In [1] and RE-{Co, Ni}-Pb [4] systems, the compounds crystallizing in the Ho 6 Co 2 Ga structure type were found in the RE-Co-In [5][6][7] and RE-{Co, Ni}-Pb [8,9] systems. The compounds with the Er 12 Fe 2 In 3 structure exist only in the systems RE-Fe-In [3]. Considering such similarity of the RE-T-In and RE-T-Pb systems we expected the formation of compounds RE 12 Fe 2 Pb 3 with the Er 12 Fe 2 In 3 type of structure.…”

“…The Pd atoms are surrounded by trigonal prisms of Dy atoms with two Dy and one Pd capping lateral faces: [Pd(Dy 8 Pd 1 )]. Such polyhedra, centered by transition metal atoms, are typical for the structures of RE 12 Co 6 In (Sm 12 Ni 6 Intype) [23], RE 6 Co 2 In (Ho 6 Co 2 Ga-type) [24,25], RE 12 Fe 2 In 3 (Er 12 Fe 2 In 3 -type) [26], and RE 14 Co 3 In 3 (Lu 14 Co 3 In 3 -type) [27,28] and many two-layered structures of ternary indides [1]. The coordination number of the indium atoms is equal to 10.…”

“…Empty RE 6 octahedra occur in the structure types Sm 12 Ni 6 In [6], Ho 6 Co 2 Ga [7], and Er 12 Fe 2 In 3 [8]. These octahedra are condensed via all common corners, leading to a ReO 3 -related framework.…”
