Fe(Cu)‐Containing Coordination Polymers: Syntheses, Crystal Structures, and Applications as Benzyl Alcohol Oxidation Catalysts

Abstract: In this paper three coordination polymers, {[Fe(fcz) were synthesized. Crystallographic analysis reveals that polymer 1 exhibits a 2-D rhombohedral grid structure with (4, 4) nets, while polymer 2 has a 1-D double-chain framework. The structure of polymer 3 is similar to that of 1. We found that polymers 1-3 could effectively catalyze the oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde with H 2 O 2 (30 mass-%) as oxidant in aqueous medium. Various reaction conditions were studied, and optimal reaction conditions

“…Currently, the assembly of multidentate ligands with transition metal [1,2] is of great interest due to their great use in constructing two-and three-dimensional polymers with functional properties, such as catalysis [3,4], optical material [5], and gas adsorbents [6]. Although some works have touched with these study [7,8], they mostly recur on the use of transition metal to form such complicated structures.…”

“…Self-assembly processes involving metal ions and organic ligands directed by either metal coordination or hydrogen bonds have attracted much attention in the field of supramolecular chemistry and current coordination chemistry (Batten, et al,1998;Moler, et al, 2001;Moulton, et al, 2001;Kim, et al, 2002;Evans, et al, 2002). The use of rigid or flexible spacer ligands is of considerable interests in recent years owing to their potential as building blocks for supramolecular assemblies (Sauvage, et al,1995;Fujita, et al, 2001;Aromí, et al, 2006) and their ability to act as optical sensors and heterogeneous catalysts (Yoo, et al, 2003;Takizawa, et al, 2003;Hong, et al, 2004;Kitagawa, et al, 2004;Hong, et al, 2005;Han, et al, 2006). In our attempt to investigate the design and control of the self-assembly of coordination polymers with the rigid bridging ligands, we have employed Cd II to develop a new polymeric complex with the ligand 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethene.…”

“…The TON for the selective oxidation of 1-octanol to 1-octanal reached to 46 with 99% selectivity. Hou and coworkers reported in 2006 an iron coordination polymer {[Fe(fcz) 2 Cl 2 ]·2CH 3 OH} n with fcz ¼ 1-(2,4-difluorophenyl)-1,1-bis[(1H-1,2,4-triazol-l-yl)methyl]ethanol which catalyzed the oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde with hydrogen peroxide as oxidant in 87% yield and up to 100% selectivity [149]. An alternative approach is based on the use of heteropoly acids, whereby the incorporation of vanadium and iron into a molybdophosphoric acid catalyst led to high yields for the oxidation of various alcohols (up to 94%) with molecular oxygen [150].…”
