FDG PET of Alveolar Soft Part Sarcoma

Abstract: Alveolar soft part sarcoma (ASPS) is a very rare, but distinctive type of soft tissue sarcoma, whose name is derived from the pseudoalveolar appearance of its histology. In this report, the FDG PET/CT findings of ASPS are described in a 17-year-old asthmatic female who presented with worsening respiratory symptoms and a pelvic mass. The staging PET showed heterogeneous intense incorporation of FDG within the mass and variable FDG incorporation within the multiple lung nodules. In concordance with other soft ti… Show more

“…Both the primary and metastatic ASPS in our study demonstrated variable FDG uptake, which is in agreement with the previously reported single case (SUVmax, 1.8-5.9). 28 The SUVmax values are also similar to other soft-tissue sarcomas. A review of 212 patients of sarcomas (both osseous and softtissue sarcomas) revealed the mean SUVmax value of the primary and/or the most avid metastatic lesion in the positive cases to range from 5.6 to 23.2 (median, 9.9), with most lesions having an SUVmax .2.5.…”

“…To the best of our knowledge, there are no previous reports regarding FDG uptake in a case of orbital ASPS. The maximum FDG uptake of SUV in patients with ASPS in other body parts is 1.8 -10.1 [22][23][24][25] . A previous study reported the presence of thrombosed tumor vessels [3] .…”

“…Our case also demonstrated the presence of numerous collateral vessels in the tumor and in the peritumoral region in addition to the renal artery and vein with variceal changes. The PET-CT facilitated the differentiation of the primary lesion from metastatic lesions in the presence of multiple masses at the time of initial diagnosis (6). In this case, the highest FDG uptake (max SUV = 6.4) was observed in the mass of the left kidney.…”
