FBXW24 controls female meiotic prophase progression by regulating SYCP3 ubiquitination

Abstract: Correct female meiotic prophase is critical for stable genetic passage. Wang et al. identified a novel E3 ubiquitin ligase, FBXW24, which regulated female meiotic prophase progression from pachytene to metaphase II by promoting SYCP3 degradation and double-strand break repair

“…Additionally, it has been demonstrated that tdrd12 exhibits predominant expression in the acrosome, and plays a role in acrosome development [43]. SYCP3 is a component of the synaptic complex that governs homologous recombination during meiosis, and it is also involved in meiotic regulation [44]. The cytoplasmic ribonucleoprotein granule TDRD5 is involved in RNA processing during spermatogenesis [45].…”

“…1A), thereby promoting their degradation by the proteasome (16). Depleting SCF subunits during meiosis leads to severe synapsis defects in fungi, plants, and animals (17)(18)(19)(20)(21)(22)(23)(24)(25), indicating a pervasive role of SCF in regulating SC assembly. In C. elegans, the SCF complex containing an F-box protein progression of meiosis (PROM)-1 (SCF PROM-1 ) targets a Protein phosphatase 2C (PP2C) phosphatase Protein phosphatase 1D (PPM-1.D) for degradation during the transition from mitosis to meiosis, leading to activation of Checkpoint kinase 2 (CHK-2) kinase and initiation of meiotic chromosome dynamics (26)(27)(28).…”

“…26 Several F-box proteins have been demonstrated to play crucial roles in homolog pairing, synapsis/desynapsis, and meiotic recombination across diverse species, and their substrates have started to emerge. 11,12,[27][28][29][30][31][32] However, the list is nowhere near complete, and it is unknown how the SCF complex recognizes a variety of substrates to regulate meiotic chromosome dynamics.…”
