Favre-Racouchot Syndrome in a 39-Year Old Female following Radiation Therapy

Abstract: Background: Favre-Racouchot syndrome is a cutaneous disease characterized by nodules, cysts, and comedones that typically develops on sun-exposed areas of the face. This syndrome most commonly affects white males between the ages of 40 and 60 years and is frequently associated with chronic sun exposure and, more recently, chronic cigarette smoking. “…Radiation therapy has been also described as a possible predisposing factor. 13 In fact, five cases of postradiation FRD are described in the literature. Cysts and comedones developed in the irradiated region, after a variable time following radiotherapy, ranging from 2 weeks 14 up to several years.…”

“…1 The cause of the disease is still unclear, and patients with this disease often have excessive smoking, prolonged sun exposure, ionizing radiation, harsh environment, and other related factors. 2 , 3 With the high incidence among fishermen, farmers, drivers, and the low incidence in women, the disease may be related to its occupational characteristics. 4 It usually occurs in the temporal, periorbital, neck, back of the hand and other exposure areas, with clinical manifestations of blackhead, cyst and elastic fiber nodules as the main features.…”

“…Major risk factors for FRD seem to be chronic UV exposure, cigarette smoking and radiation therapy. [2][3][4] Histologically FRD is characterized by significant actinic elastosis and epidermal atrophy. 5 Although FRD is a common condition, there are not many treatment options.…”
