Favoring Trauma as an Etiological Factor in Denture Stomatitis

Abstract: The etiology of denture stomatitis remains controversial. Trauma due to unstable dentures has been suggested as an etiological factor. Therefore, we tested the hypothesis that the prevalence of denture stomatitis is reduced when mandibular dentures are stabilized by implants. Data were collected at a one-year follow-up from 173 edentulous elders who had randomly received mandibular implant overdentures or conventional dentures. The diagnosis of denture stomatitis was determined according to the Newton classifi… Show more

“…Denture trauma due to unstable dentures is also one of etiological factors of denture stomatitis. Immunohistochemical analysis of the mucosal tissue involved in denture stomatitis has demonstrated a possible role of trauma in the variation of expression of the basement membrane antigens (11).…”

“…Denture stomatitis is a diffuse redness of the mucosa occurring under upper dentures in edentulous patients (Figure 7), particularly when patients complain that their dentures do not fit well. 38 The most common symptom is a burning sensation, although patients may also be asymptomatic. This is considered to be a form of candidiasis with the organism actually infecting the porous denture acrylic and causing contact hypersensitivity inflammation of the adjacent mucosa.…”

“…6,7 Despite its high prevalence rate, the aetiology of DS is not fully understood 8 and is also somewhat controversial; however, researchers believe that the entity has a complex and multifactorial pathogenesis. 9 Infection by Candida albicans has been surmised to be the main aetiological agent and it has been correlated with the incidence of DS in various studies. [10][11][12] Other factors have also been reported in the aetiology of DS.…”
