Favorable Effects of Tea on Reducing the Cognitive Deficits and Brain Morphological Changes in Senescence-Accelerated Mice

Abstract: SummaryThe present study was carried out to explore the effects of oolong and green teas on improving the memory deficits and brain pathological changes in senescence accelerated-prone mice P8 (SAMP8). Six-month-old mice were supplied with oolong tea, green tea or water as the sole drinking fluid for 16 wk. The memory ability of mice was evaluated by passive and active avoidance tests, while the extent of the brain degeneration was measured by the spongiosis grades and the lipofuscin percentage in the hippocam… Show more

“…The intake of 1% EtOH had anti-aging effects in SAMP lines. The SAMP lines are often used to evaluate the antiaging effects of anti-oxidant foods such as reduced coenzyme Q10 (57) and teas (58,59). Ethanol is metabolized by alcohol dehydrogenase and aldehyde dehydrogenase, microsomal ethanol oxidation system (MEOS), and catalase.…”

“…We further investigated the pro-cognitive effect of LOE in SAMP8 mice, which are known to develop early onset of deficits in learning and memory and have been demonstrated to be a suitable model for studying fundamental mechanisms of Alzheimer's disease Morley 1992, 1993;Chan et al 2006;Takeda 2009). In the novel object recognition tests, 3-monthold SAMP8 mice showed sustained recognition memory up to 3 h after the training session, spending more time on the novel object compared to the familiar object (Fig.…”

“…Animal studies involving other flavonoid-rich food supplementation such as tea [35] and pomegranate juice [87], or pure flavonols such as quercetin, rutin [159] or fisetin [123] have provided further evidence that dietary flavonoids are beneficial in reversing the course of neuronal and behavioural ageing. For example, the flavanol (-)-epicatechin, especially in combination with exercise, has been observed to enhance the retention, but not the acquisition, of rat spatial memory in water maze tasks [214].…”
