Introduction With tremendous economic growth taking place in India, 'Eating Out' has assumed great importance for the younger generation resulting in proliferation of the college cafeteria industry. Objective The study was conducted to assess the microbiological safety of food served in the cafeterias of two colleges (C-1 and C-2) of University of Delhi. Methods Information was gathered regarding catering operations and microbiological quality of water and 13 common food items was assessed. Results There were lacunae in all aspects of catering operations. C-1 and C-2 obtained values of 41.9% and 63.9% for overall desirable practices for catering and food material handling practices. Water from source was generally satisfactory in quality. Almost all the food items showed high standard plate count and coliform count. Further, 37% and 46% of the food samples tested positive for Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, respectively. Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point study revealed that contamination occurred at several points during the course of preparation. Conclusion The study indicated that the sanitary and hygiene practices followed in the cafeterias of the two colleges were extremely unsatisfactory. It is imperative that the concerned authorities take speedy appropriate remedial action and ensure that safe food is provided in the college cafeterias.

Causal tree analysis for quality control of the lead acid battery manufacturing process

Summary The aim of this paper is the quality control of the manufactured lead acid battery by using the causal and fault tree analysis. The causal tree allows the description of the correlations between the battery degradation modes and their causes during the manufacturing process. The causes of the degradation are the low quality of lead oxide, low grid oxidation, bad adjustment of temperature and density, wrong dosage of additives, irregular dosage of lead calcium or lead antimony, and existence of impurities. These causes facilitate the appearance of the degradation modes during the battery use such as the stratification of electrolyte, poor cohesion of active mass, hard sulfating, and corrosion of electrodes. The consequences of the several causes during the manufacturing process on the parameters of the electrical equivalent circuit of the battery are discussed to elaborate the fault tree and analyze the new manufactured lead acid battery quality. In fact, a diagnostic method based on the analysis of the electrical equivalent circuit parameters' variation is developed. This diagnostic method allows the determination of the rated capacity loss and the degradation depth of new manufactured lead acid battery. Therefore, this study allows identifying the causes leading to manufacturing defects and their impact on the available rated capacity of the battery to judge its quality.

Mobilitas masyarakat yang semakin meningkat dan mudahnya kepemilikan kendaraan bermotor disinyalir menyebabkan kepadatan lalu lintas. Hal ini mengakibatkan meningkatnya angka kecelakaan. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah menemukan penyebab dan menentukan fungsi sebaran kecelakaan lalu lintas di Provinsi Bengkulu dengan menggunakan analisis fault tree. Analisis fault tree adalah analisis kegagalan dengan pendekatan dari atas yang dimulai dari event tidak diinginkan yang disebut Top event. Bagan fault tree di bangun dengan menelusuri semua cabang event yang dapat berkontribusi terhadap Top event. Setelah fault tree selesai dibangun, analisis kualitatif atau kuantitatif dapat dilakukan. Dengan menggunakan data jumlah kecelakaan lalu lintas dibangun fault tree dengan Top event yang didefinisikan sebagai Kecelakaan Lalu lintas di Provinsi Bengkulu Tahun 2012. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa faktor manusia yang tidak tertib merupakan penyebab utama terjadinya kecelakaan lalu lintas di Provinsi Bengkulu. Kemudian dengan asumsi Basic event menyebar Poisson diperoleh selang kepercayaan untuk rata-rata kecelakaan lalu lintas di Provinsi Bengkulu adalah 772 ± 17 event per tahun. Kecelakaan lalu lintas terjadi sebanyak 2 sampai 3 event kecelakaan perhari.
