Due to the advantages of Fuzzy reasoning Petri-nets(FPN)on uncertain and incomplete information processing. It is a promising technique to solve the complex power system fault-section estimation problem. Therefore, we propose a novel estimation method based on Adaptive Fuzzy Petri Nets (AFPN), in this algorithm, the AFPN is used to build a dynamic fault diagnosis fuzzy reasoning model, where the weights in fuzzy reasoning are decided by the incomplete and uncertain alarm information of protective relays and circuit breakers. The validity and feasibility of this method is illustrated by simulation examples. Results show that the fault section can be diagnosed correctly through fuzzy reasoning models for ten cases, and the AFPN not only takes the descriptive advantages of fuzzy Petri net, but also has learning ability as neural network..

SUMMARY Fault diagnosis following a disturbance in a power system is of great importance for the operators in the control center as a prerequisite for system restoration. In this article, for the first time, an analytic method for fault diagnosis, using the wide area measurement system (WAMS) and employing circuit rules, is developed. Instead of conventional information about status of protective relays and circuit breakers, voltage and current phasors at different points of the power network after fault occurrence are utilized. Because most of the power systems will be equipped with WAMS consisting of high‐speed sampling features, the proposed method introduces a new application of WAMS for fault diagnosis without the need for additional hardware. In this method, with the aid of network impedance matrix, analytic voltage and current phasors resulted after a fault in each of the fault candidate points are compared with those monitored by WAMS. The faulted point is where the best fitting coincides with the monitored voltage and current phasors. The proposed method is applied on IEEE 118‐bus test system where the results confirm its ability in wide‐area fault diagnosis of large power networks. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Summary This paper proposes a fault diagnosis system based on the fuzzy relation theory to estimate the faulty item/section(s) of a large power generation station and its transmission lines. Therefore, it diagnoses the faulted item/section(s) in terms of the degree of membership. Besides that, it also examines the mis‐operation of corresponding circuit breakers. The proposed method utilizes the final information of protective relays and corresponding circuit breakers to build the sagittal diagrams which represent the fuzzy relations for each item/section(s). In order to testify the validity and feasibility of that method, a computer simulation of High Dam power generation station and its 500 kV double‐circuit transmission lines is used. It is shown from two study cases that proposed fault diagnosis system is useful in diagnosing multiple faults as well as simple faults. Moreover, it has rapid reasoning, correct efficient and using flexible in a power generation station and its transmission lines for online fault diagnosis. Finally, it enables, assists and supports the operator of the power generation station control room to make the right decision, especially in case of loss of the communication with the dispatch center.
