Fatty acyl-CoA reductase influences wax biosynthesis in the cotton mealybug, Phenacoccus solenopsis Tinsley

Abstract: Mealybugs are highly aggressive to a diversity of plants. The waxy layer covering the outermost part of the integument is an important protective defense of these pests. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying wax biosynthesis in mealybugs remain largely unknown. Here, we analyzed multi-omics data on wax biosynthesis by the cotton mealybug, Phenacoccus solenopsis Tinsley, and found that a fatty acyl-CoA reductase (PsFAR) gene, which was highly expressed in the fat bodies of female mealybugs, contributed t… Show more

“…RNAi-mediated suppression of FAR expression in the cotton mealybug, Phenacoccus solenopsis Tinsley, resulted in reduced CHC levels in the wax layer [54]. Mealybugs with reduced CHC content exhibited increased mortality when exposed to desiccation and deltamethrin treatments, highlighting the importance of this enzyme for insect adaptation to water loss and insecticide stress.…”

“…In the present study, O. furnacalis PGRPA may possess similar functions with other orthologs. In Lepidoptera, XM_028315055.1 ( OfCG5065‐1 ), which is a fatty acyl‐CoA reductase ( FAR ),L can affect the synthesis of pheromones (Tong et al, 2022). For instance, HzeaFAR1 identified in H. armigera has been proven to be able to synthesize wax to isolate foreign infestations (Dou et al, 2020).…”
