Fatty acid profiles, antioxidant compounds and antiradical properties ofPinus halepensisMill. cones and seeds

Abstract: PHC showed important antioxidant activities as well as high levels of bioactive compounds. Thus PHC is a potential source of natural antioxidants that may afford several health benefits. However, the lipid extract of PHS seems to have more nutritional value as a polyunsaturated oil than that of PHC, which is high in saturated and trans FAs.

“…It should be mentioned that the value of TFC for methanolic extracts of seeds and cones extracts (TFC = 17.14, 193.25, respectively) in the current work were much higher than those reported for the same species in literature [13] in which the methanolic extracts of seeds and cones had TFC equal 0.35 and 3.26, respectively. This can be attributed to the differences in climate, soil composition and other conditions in the countries were the plant was grown [22].…”

“…The DPPH radicals inhibition activity of cones and seeds methanolic extracts (EC50 = 0.00148 mg/mL and 0.127 mg/mL, respectively) was significantly better than that for extracts from the same parts obtained in the in the work [13] in which EC50 was 0.474 mg/mL for cones and 2.323 mg/mL for seeds extracts.…”

“…This result is apparently due to the P. halepensis extract being rich in phenolic antioxidants, which decreased oxidative stress and therefore inflammation [21, 56], as well as to the wound-healing effect of C. oestroides extract [28-31]. …”

“…Plant products, such as Aloe vera , sweet almond oil, and olive oil, containing bioactive compounds protect the skin from the radiation-induced damage and have been used as excipients or ingredients in several pharmaceutical and cosmetic preparations [8, 15-20]. Pinus halepensis extracts have shown protective and therapeutic skin properties [21-23]. Bark extracts from P. halepensis contain polyphenols, proanthocyanidins, flavonols, and flavonoids; therefore, they may exert therapeutic effects against pain, inflammation, oxidative stress, and cancer.…”
