Fatty Acid Esters of Hydroxy Fatty Acids (FAHFAs) Are Associated With Diet, BMI, and Age

Abstract: Background: Fatty acid esters of hydroxy fatty acids (FAHFAs) are a group of fatty acids with potential anti-inflammatory and anti-diabetic effects. The blood levels of FAHFAs and their regulation in humans have hardly been studied. Objective: We aimed to investigate serum FAHFA levels in well-characterized human cohorts, to evaluate associations with age, sex, BMI, weight loss, diabetic status, and diet. Methods: We analyzed levels of stearic-acid-9-hydroxy-stearic-acid (9-SAHSA), oleic-acid-9-hydroxy-stearic-a… Show more

“…The recently recognized beneficial anti-inflammatory and antidiabetic properties of FAHFAs unlock multiple potential applications within the pharmaceutical and health sectors . Synthetic chemistry displays promising potential in producing novel phospholipid species with projected enhanced health characteristics through the incorporation of FAHFAs into significantly less biodegradable glycerophosphates.…”

“…The levels of PAHSAs are strongly correlated with insulin sensitivity 1,14 and are lower in the adipose tissue and serum of patients with obesity and diabetes than in those without obesity. 3,15 High-fat diet-fed GPR120-deficient mice exhibit severe peripheral blood insulin resistance and significantly reduced insulin sensitivity. 16 In humans and rodents with T2D, GLUT4 is also selectively downregulated in adipose tissue.…”

“…When necessary, fat is converted to glucose to maintain blood glucose stability. The levels of PAHSAs are strongly correlated with insulin sensitivity 1,14 and are lower in the adipose tissue and serum of patients with obesity and diabetes than in those without obesity 3,15 . High‐fat diet‐fed GPR120‐deficient mice exhibit severe peripheral blood insulin resistance and significantly reduced insulin sensitivity 16 .…”
