Fatty acid composition of developing tree peony (Paeonia section Moutan DC.) seeds and transcriptome analysis during seed development

Abstract: BackgroundTree peony (Paeonia section Moutan DC.) is known for its excellent ornamental and medicinal values. In 2011, seeds from P. ostii have been identified as novel resource of α-linolenic acid (ALA) for seed oil production and development in China. However, the molecular mechanism on biosynthesis of unsaturated fatty acids in tree peony seeds remains unknown. Therefore, transcriptome data is needed to better understand the underlying mechanisms.ResultsIn this study, lipid accumulation contents were measur… Show more

“…These DEGs were reference candidate genes that synergistically regulated the carpel quantitative variation in P. rockii. Because there have been no genomic information of Paeonia yet, RNA-seq technology has become an important means of screening candidate genes associated with key traits [40,42]. However, huge genomic information (about 12.5 G) and complex genetic background make it very difficult to identify gene loci effectively by the NGS method only.…”

“…It also identified a large number of novel long non-coding RNAs and fusion transcripts [39]. At present, only NGS and SLAF-seq technologies have been applied frequently in tree peonies [40][41][42][43]. It is the first attempt to explore the carpel quantitative variation by SMLRS.…”

“…These include Sacha Inchi oil, peony oil, sea buckthorn oil, cypress oil, cress salad oil. The content of α-linolenic acid is 50; 45; 35; 30 % in these oils [17]. The sea buckthorn oil effect on the fatty acid content of lipids is little known.…”

“…Transcriptome analysis that uses deep sequencing technology now permits large‐scale gene expression detection in the absence of a reference genome. Although there have been several investigations of transcriptome sequencing of tree peony (Gai et al., ; Zhou et al., ; Zhang et al., , ; Zhao et al., ; Barghini et al., ; Li et al., ; Shi et al., ; Gao et al., ; Wang et al., ), studies of drought‐responsive differential expression genes in tree peonies have not yet been reported in the literature. Two separate studies of reference gene selection in tree peony—one in plants with different flower colors and another during flower development—were recently reported (Li et al., ; Zhou et al., ).…”
