Fatigue susceptibility of an endodontic fibre post material

Abstract: A representative endodontic fibre post material was susceptible to a variety of ageing and fatigue processes. The effects of ageing and fatigue had a more pronounced impact on short-beam shear strength than on elastic modulus. The effects of boiling in water and thermal cycling in water were considerably larger than those of simple storage in water.

“…Thermocycling is considered as a clinically relevant testing method, representative of the hot-wet conditions in the oral cavity. The thermo-cycled posts exhibited a significant reduction in FS, consistent with literature findings 7,36) ; however, K FRC exhibited a decrease of only 16% compared to 35% of everStick ® (Table 1), indicating greater thermal stability (good hot-wet properties), which is expected to enhance clinical longevity. Since KF fibers have superior thermal stability in comparison to glass 14) and KF composites have better resistance to water 37) , the lower extent of damage of the K FRC post thermocycling is indicative of the significant contribution of the Kevlar fibers.…”

“…In cases of great tooth structure loss, post-retained restorations are widely used [1]. Among those, prefabricated fiberglass posts have received considerable attention in the scientific literature [2][3][4], industry, and clinicians' routines due to their advantages such as: aesthetics, homogeneous stress distribution due to their elastic modulus similar to that of dentin [5], ease of handling, and proven clinical success. Despite all the benefits, fiber posts serve only to create adequate retention for the resin composite core to support a full crown.…”

“…All tested groups revealed lower bond strength values after aging (long water storage and thermal cycling). This finding could be attributed to the hydrolytic degradation that negatively affected the adhesion between glass fiber post and resin cement 5,23) . The failure analysis revealed more adhesive failure (Type 1) after aging which was consistent with the lower bond strength values compared with no aging in all groups.…”

“…So, the post is protected from contamination by water. If the adhesion between the post-cement, postroot or post-core systems fails somehow, there will be a risk of water contamination of the fiber post which may adversely affect the flexural properties 5,41) .…”
