Fatigue performance of hybrid overlap friction stir welding and adhesive bonding of an Al‐Mg‐Cu alloy

Abstract: The need for weight reduction and leaner manufacturing and assembly processes in aircraft construction has led to the pursuit of welding technologies. One such technology that has been considered for this application is friction stir welding (FSW). Since it is a solid‐state joining method, it creates high performing joints in a wide range of materials while avoiding overlap lengths and added weight from fasteners, crack stoppers, doublers, etc. However, the adoption of this technology to the assembly of large … Show more

“…For instance, this method was used to improve the strength of FSW joints of magnesium-to-aluminum FS spot welded joints, resulting in increased quasistatic and fatigue strength [100]. Similarly, this method was proposed for continuous overlap joints of AA2024-T3, resulting in improved quasistatic and fatigue strength [101]. Lertora et al [102] in 2019 studied FSW-AB in weld-through and flow-in configuration of AA6082 aluminum alloy, showing that the latter improved joint strength and joint fatigue life.…”

“…FSW is a revolutionary joining method that allowed the welding of previously unwieldable alloys with excellent characteristics and has an enormous potential for application in a large array of industries. Friction stir welding has shown to produce sound quality, high performing joints making it the most appealing welding technology for aeronautical structures [4]. In its most basic form, FSW is performed with a tool composed of shoulder and pin, fractioning and mixing the material to weld.…”

“…Epipolar geometry is an important tool for developing such constraints, it points out the epipolar constraints that exist between corresponding feature points on two or more images, such constraints can be obtained by camera calibration or even just by a given set of corresponding feature points [4]. Braga D et al proposed a tolerance map model (Tolerance.Map, T-Map) compatible with ASME standard, T-Map is an imaginary convex polyhedron shape point set space, its shape and size reflect the type and various possible changes of the target object, so that the various tolerance changes of the target object have a one-to-one correspondence with the points in the T-Map [5].…”
