Fatigue damage analysis of fiber-reinforced polymer composites—A review

Abstract: Fiber-reinforced polymer composites are becoming suitable and substantial materials in the repair and replacement of conventional metallic materials because of their high strength and stiffness. These composites undergo various types of static and fatigue loads during service. One of the major tests that conventional and composite materials have to experience is fatigue test. It refers to the testing for the cyclic behavior of materials. Composite materials are different from metals, as they indicate a distinc… Show more

“…Nowadays, fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composite materials are fast replacing the conventional materials in a wide array of fields, such as aerospace, transportation, biomedical equipment, automobiles, mining industries, etc. 13 In recent years, the FRP composite materials have become an essential class of tribo-materials due to their self-lubricating properties, low friction coefficient, high resistance to corrosion, generation of less noise in running condition and also for high flexibility in designing of components. 47 Roughly one-third of the fuel energy gets exhausted in automobiles alone to overcome friction.…”

“…PEEK and polyamide are the widely used matrix materials among thermoplastic resins [16]. Various methods such as hand layup, vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding, resin transfer molding, pultrusion are mostly used for the preparation of laminated composite [17].…”

“…They propagate until they meet and form a macroscopic crack. [10] Mortazavian shows in [38] a similar behaviour for two fibre reinforced materials (PBT and PA6) under stress control. This suggests that a stress based lifetime assessment can be conducted up to high stress amplitudes for highly filled polymers.…”

“…Besides this approach a counting number of different methods were developed to predict the lifetime of reinforced polymers. In literature an excerpt of the latest fatigue-models [10] [11] [12] [13] and techniques [14] [15] is given. Necessary models which describe the influence of fibre orientation [16] [17] [18], temperature [19] [20], notches [21] and mean stress [22] [23] [24] are already included.…”
