Fatigue crack growth prediction model under variable amplitude loading conditions

Abstract: Crack size prediction under variable amplitude loading is a very complex process, which is also important for life prediction in engineering. A crack growth model considering different stress ratio for fatigue remaining life prediction is proposed in this paper. The model utilizes stress ratio to describe the variable loading sequences, which makes the calculation greatly simplified. The rain-flow method is utilized to characterize the load sequence effects under variable amplitude loading. In addition, partic… Show more

“…For the complex eight-step loading containing varying loading paths applied It must be pointed out here that the experimental results employed above mainly refer to crack initiation life. During the crack growth phase, fatigue damage mechanism could be fully different due to the interaction of crack tip plastic zones and the crack growth retardation effects (Li et al, 2021). When a higher estimation accuracy is required, the dissipation of the plastic energy near the crack tip and the parameters describing the evolution of crack plastic zones should be introduced into the proposed model.…”

“…In engineering practices, the loading conditions are usually categorized to constant amplitude loading (CAL) and variable amplitude loading (VAL). Tremendous efforts have been made by researchers to predict fatigue failure and fatigue lifetime under CAL(Alexopoulos et al., 2013; D’Antuono, 2020; Pandey and Chand, 2004) and VAL (Huffman and Beckman, 2013; Kwofie and Rahbar, 2013; Li et al., 2021).…”
