Fate of Two Herbicides in Zero‐Tension Lysimeters and in Field Soil

Abstract: In Germany, zero-tension lysimeters are used as part of the registration requirements in case pesticides pose a potential threat to contaminate the groundwater. However, the water regime and the method of pesticide sampling differ between the lysimeters and the field. We monitored the transport of the two herbicides ethidimuron [1-(5- ethylsulfonyl-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl)-1,3-dimethylurea] (ETD) and methabenzthiazuron [1-benzothiazol-2-yl-1,3-dimethyl-urea] (MBT) and their main metabolite, accompanied with brom… Show more

“…Although ETD is much more water-soluble, its biodegradability is much lower than that of MBT, resulting in proposed environmental half-lives of 162 to 2,059 d compared to approximately 24 to 230 d for MBT 21, 37, 38. Furthermore, MBT was found to be biodegradable 3840, giving an additional explanation for the overall smaller MBT residue fractions in the water extracts.…”

“…They found K oc_f values of 313 and 660 L kg −1 , respectively. In the case of MBT, lab values tend to be larger than the value derived by Kasteel et al (2010) The K oc values derived from batch experiments were often >1000 L kg −1…”

“…Kasteel et al (2010) estimated field K oc values for ETD and MBT by inversely solving the CDE equation using measured resident concentration profiles. They found K oc_f values of 313 and 660 L kg −1 , respectively.…”
