We reviewed the chemical/physical properties, toxicity, environmental fate, and ecotoxicity of strong acids in soil and groundwater environments. We recommend that sulfuric acid and hydrofluoric acid be classified as chemicals of priority control based on volumes used, toxicity, carcinogenicity, and past significant spill events. Understanding the behavior and transport of spilled strong acids in soil and groundwater environments requires a multi-disciplinary approach, as they can undergo a variety of geochemical and biochemical reactions with complex geomedia. The toxicity of spilled acid is dependent on the characteristics of the geomedia exposed to the acid and the amount of residual protons following acid–substrate interaction. Soil texture, cation exchange capacity, mineral composition, bedrock type, and aluminum content may be important factors affecting the toxicity of spilled acid in soil-groundwater environments. We expect that the results of this study will contribute preliminary data for future research on chemical spills.

Dans l'intérêt de voir le comportement du sol et des végétaux en milieu industriel, et en vue d'une implantation à grande échelle, des parcelles expérimentales sont installées sur le site de l'usine Laterrière. Aussi, à partir des trois premières phases préliminaires, la prêle et le pâturin sont les deux espèces retenues pour la partie essai pilote en milieu industriel. De la même manière, la quatrième phase conduit à utiliser le terreau à jardin comme substrat. Quarante-deux parcelles de 1 m 3 sont réparties en fonction de trois niveaux d'exposition. Des parcelles avec ou sans toit sont construites pour étudier l'impact des dépôts humides de fluorures. À l'intérieur de ces parcelles se retrouve aléatoirement mais de façon égale soit la prêle, soit le pâturin. Mais ce projet n'aurait certainement pas pu se concrétiser sans le soutien financier de RioTinto Alcan. Au fil des années, RTA a développé une conscience environnementale et ils sont à la source de divers projets de réduction des rejets. C'est valorisant et motivant de travailler pour un industriel qui ne recherche pas que la performance de ses installations mais aussi qui recherche l'amélioration continue.
