Fatal invasive aspergillosis in a child with chronic granulomatous disease

Abstract: Patients with chronic granulomatous disease, a primary immunodeficiency, experience granulomatous complications and recurrent life-threatening opportunistic bacterial and fungal infections. In this article, we report on a case of invasive aspergillosis in an eight-year-old boy with chronic granulomatous disease, who presented with pleural effusion and pneumonia, cerebral venous sinus thrombosis, and unusual skin lesions caused by Aspergillus fumigatus. Antifungal treatment with itraconazole and other antifunga… Show more

“…The CGD is an uncommon disease making patients more susceptible to opportunistic fungal and bacterial infections including aspergillosis due to the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics, immunodeficiency, and Aspergillus colonization of a pre-existing lung cavity. [10][11][12] According to a data analysis from the CGD registry, Aspergillus nidulans and Aspergillus fumigatus are the most common identified species in the brain, bones, and lungs. 13 Despite the fact that the most frequent obtained pathogen from CGD patients is A. fumigatus, A. nidulans seems to be more virulent and has a greater mortality rate.…”

“…In the past decade, many species of fungi such as Aspergillus , Candida , Fusarium , Cryptococcus , etc. have appeared as a considerable cause of morbidity and mortality in human and animal infections worldwide [ [16] , [17] , [18] , [58] , [59] ]. Aspergillus species are opportunistic microorganisms, globally distributed in air, soil, and plants, and the majority of cases reported occurred in patients with predisposing conditions such as hematologic malignancies, steroid use, human immunodeficiency virus, diabetes mellitus, etc.…”
