Fat Replacement of Paraspinal Muscles with Aging in Healthy Adults

Abstract: The paraspinal muscles were more susceptible to age-related changes than leg muscles. Further, men had significantly lower fat fractions in lumbar paraspinal muscles, and BMI was positively associated with thigh, but not paraspinal, fat fraction.

“…Similar variations and decreases over time have been described in other neuromuscular diseases. 13 Thus, the annual increase seen in SBMA is 3 to 6 times greater than in healthy subjects. 11,12,27 Healthy subjects also have an increase in muscle fat content with age.…”

“…Some patients, however, had a great variation in muscle fat content and others had a decrease in fat content in some muscles from baseline to follow-up. We believe that these variations can be explained by changes in body mass index, physical activity, and the way a muscle is used, 13 as well as by small errors of the quantification method. 10 One of our patients DHEA-S = dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate; FSH = follicle-stimulating hormone; LH = luteinizing hormone; SD = standard deviation; SHBG = sex hormone-binding globulin.…”

“…Dahlqvist et al. () argued that the age‐related increase in paraspinal fat infiltration did not correlate with body mass index (BMI) or physical activity, suggesting it might be a developmental phenomenon that may be difficult to modify with interventions.…”
