Fast Vertical Handover Algorithm for Vehicular Communication: A Holistic Approach

Abstract: -Next generation vehicular communication environment will consist of heterogeneous radio access networks (RAN). For seamless connectivity, vertical handover is a mandatory requirement. A novel context aware vertical handover algorithm is presented here. TOPSIS (Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution), which is a multi criteria decision making (MCDM) tool, is used for the development of algorithm and MATLAB/SIMULINK is used as simulation platform. The optimum network is selected, based o… Show more

“…A model is developed that analyzes the case in which a vehicle is kept at different positions of a highway, and the network ranking optimizes the "best" network in multiple constraint environments [15]. This evaluation technique requires knowledge of vehicular speed, RSS, type of application (bandwidth requirements), network traffic load, usage cost of service and initial delay for connection establishment.…”

“…A vertical handover algorithm for vehicular communication [15], uses (RSS), initial delay for connection establishment, network traffic load and bandwidth offered, service context like usage cost, user contexts like type of application and terminal context like speed of the vehicle as different attributes of this algorithm. RSS is considered as the triggering factor, i.e, a network will be considered as an alternative only if its RSS is above threshold.…”

“…RSS is the only criterion that is used to trigger the handoff. This work is extended in [110] where authors implemented AHP weight elicitation process along with TOPSIS to rank the networks. Not all the QoS parameters are utilized to make selection decisions.…”

“…The authors in [109] utilize AHP for both weight elicitation and network selection processes. RSS is the only criterion that is used to trigger the handoff.…”
