Fast Network Configuration in Software Defined Networking

Abstract: Software Defined Networking (SDN) provides a framework to dynamically adjust and re-program the data plane with the use of flow rules. The realization of highly adaptive SDNs with the ability to respond to changing demands or recover after a network failure in a short period of time, hinges on efficient updates of flow rules. We model the time to deploy a set of flow rules by the update time at the bottleneck switch, and formulate the problem of selecting paths to minimize the deployment time under feasibility… Show more

“…The [4] clarified that using sFlow technology embedded in the controller shows that the method can detect and reduce DDoS attacks. The study [89] discussed that SDN provides a mechanism allowing the use of flow rules to modify and re-program the data plane easily. They developed optimization architecture and associated flow configuration algorithms that reduce the configuration time by 55% and average time to recover interrupted flows by 40 %.…”

“…Achleitner, Bartolini, He, Porta and Tootaghaj [89] discussed that SDN provides a mechanism allowing the use of flow rules to modify and reprogram the data plane easily. The realization of highly adaptive SDNs with the potential to respond to evolving requirements or recover in a short period after a network outage depends on successful flow rules updates.…”

“…By installing flow table entries on switches, the SDN controller can precisely define how to handle specific types of traffic, including routing, filtering, forwarding, or modification. The installation of flow table entries affects the traffic forwarding in the data plane [ 45 ]. Effective installation of flow table entries can optimize network performance and implement various network policies, but incorrect installation may lead to network failures or performance issues.…”

“…In order to determine the flow rules and to reduce the computation time in Software Defined Networking, efficient heuristics optimization (EHO) is designed by sequential selection of path or relaxing the MILP such that the solution provided by minimum deployment time is approximated [14]. Secure routing is established by integrating whale optimization algorithm (WOA) and lion algorithm (LA) in MANET for optimal path selection [15].…”
