Fast Method for Synthesis of Alkyl and Aryl-N-Methylnitrones

Abstract: A simple, fast, efficient and eco-friendly procedure was developed for the synthesis of alkyl and aryl-N-methylnitrones. The corresponding nitrones of aromatic aldehydes, aliphatic aldehydes and alicyclic carbonyl compounds were prepared from N-methylhydroxylamine hydrochloride and Na2CO3-Na2SO4 by simply grinding at room temperature without using solvent.

“…Finally, with the comparison of our method (reaction conditions, time and yield) with other previously reported for the prepared nitrones, [10][11][12][13][25][26][27][28] determined that the yields and times obtained with this system are comparable or superior to others for the given nitrone. From the perspective of the environment, our method is eco-friendly.…”

“…The search for an alternative and novel strategy focused on diminishing the above-mentioned restrictions and improving various aspects of efficiency and environmental properties of reaction is therefore of interest. 12,13 In the last few years, the use of glycerol as a solvent for a large variety of applications or even a catalyst is increasing. 14 Today, most of the petroleum solvents suffer from environmental problems during the preparation of chemicals and this can be replaced with glycerol.…”

“…The equimolar quantity of aromatic aldehydes (a-l) and chloroform (15 mL) were added to the filtrates and the mixture was stirred till solids were formed. The crude substances were purified by their crystallization in MeOH, which finally yielded the pure nitrones 1(a-l) [32][33][34].…”

“…[1] Significant efforts have been devoted towards the development of efficient syntheses of nitrones including the condensation of N-methyl hydroxylamine hydrochloride with aromatic aldehydes, [2] theo xidation of amines [3] or imines, [4] the reduction of N-hydroxy amides, [5] thealkylation of oximes, [6] and the Cope-type hydroamination of alkenes.
