Fast iterative image reconstruction methods for fully 3D multispectral bioluminescence tomography

Abstract: We investigate fast iterative image reconstruction methods for fully 3D multispectral bioluminescence tomography for applications in small animal imaging. Our forward model uses a diffusion approximation for optically inhomogeneous tissue, which we solve using a finite element method (FEM). We examine two approaches to incorporating the forward model into the solution of the inverse problem. In a conventional direct calculation approach one computes the full forward model by repeated solution of the FEM proble… Show more

“…One is a statistical method, e.g., a Monte Carlo [26,27] or Bayesian [28,29] method. The other is optimization using a least-squares criterion [18,19,30,31], a regularization method [18][19][20][21][22][23], a level set method [32,33], etc. As a new molecular modality, the methods used for CLT reconstruction are mainly focused on optimization.…”

“…The CLT model was solved iteratively using a preconditioned conjugate gradient method with Tikhonov regularization (TR) for bioluminescence tomography (BLT) [18,30]. Because this assumption is not necessarily true, Hu et al performed a heterogeneous CLT reconstruction [20], in which the adaptive hp-finite element method (hp-FEM) [34], originally designed for BLT, was employed for CLT reconstruction.…”
