Fast Handover for Proxy Mobile IPv6 based on 802.11 Networks

Abstract: The PMIPv6 (Proxy Mobile IPv6) protocol provides local mobility to a mobile node without requiring any modification of the mobile node. A PMIPv6 domain contains multiple MAGs (Mobility Access Gateway), and they advertise the same prefix to the mobile node so that the mobile node feels like it is always on the same link. However, horizontal/vertical handover still happens while the mobile node moves among MAGs in the PMIPv6 domain, and this handover could cause undesirable delay to the mobile nodes running real… Show more

“…Accordingly, the MN should scan and evaluate the available access links all the time in order to find the best one in time. When the quality of the current access link decreases to a pre-defined threshold, the handover is triggered by the MN before the current connection is lost [13]. In order to trigger the oncoming handover in advance, a signaling message is sent from the MN to the current AR, which includes the information of the target AR.…”

“…However, this scheme is applicable only to 802.11 networks. In [7] a scheme is proposed to reduce handover delay by using a proactive correspondent registration mechanism for PMIPv6 route optimization between the correspondent nodes and media access gateway. However, the PMIPv6 draft protocol specification does not provide any route optimization.…”

“…Lee et al [12] proposed a fast handover for proxy mobile IPv6 based on 802.11 networks. This scheme uses the conversion scheme by the context information from the previous MAG to the new MAG by IAPP (Inter-Access Point Protocol) (authentication information, profile information of UE).…”

“…The PMIPv6 protocol [11,12] allows a UE to maintain the original IP address, which means the new network has partially extracted by the address prefix. The UE does not be required to perform the IP address configuration if the network connection changes.…”
