Fast Electrochemistry of Conductive Polymer Nanotubes: Synthesis, Mechanism, and Application

Abstract: Conductive polymers exhibit several interesting and important properties, such as metallic conductivity and reversible convertibility between redox states. When the redox states have very different electrochemical and electronic properties, their interconversion gives rise to changes in the polymers' conformations, doping levels, conductivities, and colors, useful attributes if they are to be applied in displays, energy storage devices, actuators, and sensors. Unfortunately, the rate of interconversion is usua… Show more

“…Hybrid metal-CP NWs are attractive candidates for nanodiodes and transistors [Pinto (2003); Park (2004); Merlo & Frisbie (2004); Pinto (2009)] as well as photonic [Guo (2008);Camposeo (2009)] and electrochromic devices [Cho & Lee (2008)]. This high applicative potential comes from the fact that they make profit from intrinsic properties of CPs (lowcost, flexibility, environmental stability, high biocompatibility) concomitantly with other properties stemming from their low-dimensionality (large surface-to-volume ratio and enhanced properties compared to bulk materials).…”

“…Current research trends mainly focus on the investigation of CP nanomaterial arrays, because they exhibit a unique combination of morphology and intrinsic properties, such as high surface to volume ratio, fast oxidation/reduction kinetic and electrical conductivity [14]. Hard-template assisted synthesis has been a common approach to produce ordered CPs nanomaterial arrays.…”

“…Third, a variety of conductive polymers have also been synthesized using electrochemical deposition since they show increased potential to replace inorganic components in many applications, including electronics, optoelectronics and energy storage devices [266][267][268]. Early studies have demonstrated successful syntheses of polymeric nanostructures, such as polypyrrole [269][270][271] and polyaniline [241], using electrochemical deposition.…”
