Fast Determination of Pyrethroid Pesticides in Tobacco by GC-MS-SIM Coupled with Modified QuEChERS Sample Preparation Procedure

Abstract: An analytical method was developed for the extraction and determination of pyrethroid pesticide residues in tobacco. The modified QuEChERS (Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged and Safe) method was applied for preparing samples. In this study, methyl cyanide (MeCN)-saturated salt aqueous was used as the two-phase extraction solvent for the first time, and a vortex shaker was used for the simultaneous shaking and concentration of the analytes. The effects of experimental parameters on extraction and clean-up e… Show more

“…Pyrethroids are synthetic pesticides derived from the natural pesticides pyrethrins that are found in chrysanthemum flowers [1]. Due to their perceived low mammalian toxicity, lower environmental persistence and selective insecticidal activity, they have gained wide acceptance of use as pesticides in agriculture, household, and animal husbandry [2]. The increased use of pyrethroids has, however, correspondingly increased the opportunity for human exposure and other non-target organisms.…”

“…The application of some insecticides, such as organophosphate, organochlorine, and carbamate insecticides, has declined or been replaced owning to their toxicity on humans and animals ( 1 ). Pyrethroid pesticides, with low toxicity to birds and mammals and short persistence in the environment, are widely used now ( 2 ).…”

“…Compared to the other sample preparation techniques such as LLE and PLE, QuEChERS technique shows not only good recoveries and relative standard deviations (RSDs) values in real samples, but higher and more consistent recoveries of targeted analytes than LLE and PLE [8]. So it has attracted much attention since its report [19][20][21][22]. The conventional QuEChERS technique involves an initial extraction with acetonitrile, followed by extraction/partitioning process with the addition of sodium chloride and anhydrous magnesium sulfate, then the extract is cleaned up by dispersive solid phase extraction with primary secondary amine (PSA) absorbent.…”
