Fast commutation of high current in double wire array Z-pinch loads

Abstract: A dynamic model of multi-MA current commutation in a double wire array Z-pinch load is proposed and studied theoretically. Initially, the load is configured as nested concentric wire arrays, with the current driven through the outer array and imploding it. Once the outer array or the annular plasma shell formed from it approaches the inner array, the imploded plasma might penetrate through the gaps between the wires, but the azimuthal magnetic field is trapped due to both the high conductivity of the inner wir… Show more

“…The full current is then transferred rapidly to what was initially the inner, imploding it rapidly onto the outer array material on axis. 20,21 The rapid implosion of the inner array has a low integral number of Rayleigh-Taylor growth times and hence has the potential for a relatively stable, high power implosion. In addition, the almost independent implosion of the outer and inner array provides enormous potential for being able to control the shape of the radiation pulse by variation of the array diameters and masses.…”

“…1,31,33 It is interesting to compare this "nested" configuration with the operation of the two-stage array described in the present paper. In a nested load configuration, the outer array inductively shields an inner array from the generator current during the ablation phase and the beginning of the snowplough implosion.…”
