Fast atom bombardment mass spectra of some alkylammonium 4‐toluenesulfonate salts

Abstract: The fast atom bombardment positive ion mass spectra of low molecular weight alkylammonium 4-toluenesulfonate salts are dominated by cluster ions of the type [(AB),A]+ or [(AB),H]+, where A is a cation, B an anion, n an integer from 0 to 4. With one exception the base peak is the cation A+.

“…The alkylammonium 4toluenesulfonate salts do not yield positive ion mass spectra under normal electron-impact and chemical ionization conditions. By fast atom bombardment a series of cluster ions of the type [(AB)nAHz]+ (A = cation; B = anion; = 0-4; x = 0-2) characteristic of the salt are generated (15). For most salts the base peak corresponds to the cation.…”

“…The salts were dissolved in deuteriated methanol or deuteriated chloroform using tetramethylsilane or chloroform for internal calibration. Details of the fast atom bombardment mass spectra are given elsewhere (15).…”

“…Recently, information on the ability of ILs to give supramolecules has been obtained also for the gas phase by tandem mass spectrometric experiments. Mass spectrometry was successfully applied to ionic liquids more that two decades ago; however, only recently it has been possible to prove and characterize the existence of aggregates of these derivatives in solution with electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) . In virtue of the gentleness and efficiency by which the ions are formed and transferred into the gas phase, the ESI technique has greatly expanded the range of molecules that may be analyzed by mass spectrometry to proteins, nucleotides, fullerenes, synthetic polymers, transition-metal complexes, and loosely bounded aggregates.…”

“…46 There are also additional peaks at M/e = 43, 57, and 75 which are from the glycerol. 47 Sulfonation of the iodide CF 3 CH 2 I was tried by both the Strecker reaction and sodium sulfite in 50% ethanol.…”
