Fast approximations of spectral lineshapes to enable optimization of a filtered Rayleigh scattering experiment

Abstract: Measuring the properties of scattered light is central to many laser-based gas diagnostic techniques, such as filtered Rayleigh scattering (FRS). Alongside the measurements, a model of the scattered light’s spectral lineshape is often used to extract quantitative information about the flow field like pressure, temperature, and velocity. In particular, the Tenti S6 or S7 model are frequently used to model the lineshape of Rayleigh–Brillouin (RB) scattered light. While accurate, it is well attested in the litera… Show more

“…Although not directly validated in this work, the generality of our approach means it can likely be used to approximate other classes of spectra like Rayleigh–Brillouin. Indeed, the method we propose is broadly inspired by approximation ideas from that literature [14] . Furthermore, our approach can use simple out‐of‐the‐box optimizers and does not require any specially written optimization code.…”

[14] Furthermore, our approach can use simple out-of-the-box optimizers and does not require any specially written optimization code. We fully expect that the method will work well with other optimization approaches like gradient-free genetic algorithms.…”

“…Finally, Hunt et al [17] assert that the Tenti-S6 model can be computationally expensive, especially when using it in an iterative scheme. Again, an iterative scheme is being used to match simulated FRS data to experimental FRS data.…”
