Farmers’ adoptability of integrated pest management of cotton revealed by a new methodology

Abstract: International audienceThe huge research efforts to develop integrated pest management (IPM) have failed to reduce pesticide use and to foster IPM adoption by farmers. Indeed, despite five decades since the concept of integrated control and threshold theory was developed, and four decades since IPM programs have been implemented in USA, Asia, Latin America, Australia, and India, the widespread use of complex IPM practices has not been adopted. This failure can be explained by IPM complexity, policy restrictions… Show more

“…The findings suggest that the farmers who are engaged in nonfarm economic activities apply larger amounts of external inputs, namely fertilizers and pesticides, than do the full-time farmers. Empirical evidence shows that socio-personal variables are the weaker predictors of the use of technologies compared to technology attributes (Rogers 1995;Batz et al 1999;Rogers 2003;Peshin 2013), biophysical factors, and resource endowments (Pattanayak et al 2003;Fernandez-Cornejo et al 2007).…”

“…However, approaches to scaling using concepts such as adoption, transfer and dissemination (e.g. Abebawa and Haile 2013;Dibba et al 2012;Peshin 2013;Rogers 1983;Wejnert 2002) tend to focus mainly on attributes of technologies and adopters that determine adoption likelihood. They do not always prepare prospective users sufficiently to engage with the systemic and complex dynamics involved in, and resulting from, scaling processes.…”

“…A national IPM policy was launched in Bangladesh in 2002, and extension staff were trained to train farmers through IPM farmers' field schools. Despite these efforts, farmers continue to use pesticides and IPM adoption remains low, a phenomenon often observed, particularly in developing countries (Morse and Buhler 1997;Peshin 2013;Parsa et al 2014). According to Parsa et al (2014), globally, institutional problems, weak adoption incentives, and outreach problems are important factors limiting adoption.…”
