FarGen: Bioresource From the Faroe Genome Project

Abstract: The Faroe Genome Project (FarGen) explores the genetic variation within the isolated population of the Faroe Islands. FarGen is an open bioresource comprising 3% of the entire Faroese population, available for further investigation of both rare and common diseases. The 1,541 volunteers include representatives from all sub-regions of the islands, and health-and socio-demographic data is collected by questionnaire, Multi-Generation Registry, Diagnostic-Registry, and National Registry. The FarGeninfrastructure is… Show more

“…The FarGen cohort comprise 1541 individuals. The recruitment procedures, socio-demographics, availability of the bioresources, DNA extraction, DNA barcoding using the 10x Genomics-Chromium controller, library construction, and sequencing has been described previously [12,15,16]. In short, inclusion criteria were: 1) participants had to be 18 years or older, 2) had to live in the Faroe Islands or be of Faroese descent, and 3) had to join the project voluntarily.…”

“…Data is available for research up on participants' re-consent. Researchers will be granted access to de-identified genetic-data and meta-data provided that the project protocol has been approved by the Faroese Scientific Ethical Committee and a template material/data transfer agreement has been signed with the Genetic Biobank of the Faroe Islands in compliance with GDPR (see reference [15]).…”

“…With the FarGen infrastructure, we are collecting biological material for whole-genome sequencing to build a reference panel of genetic variants within this population [ 16 ]. Coupled with registry data such as extended genealogical records, which go back to 1650 for 85% of the population, with some lineages going back to the 1100s ( http://biobank.fo/en ), this population may be ideal for population-based genetic research to reveal unprecedented details about human genetic disease and as a stepping stone towards precision medicine [ 17 20 ].…”
