Faraday Rotation in Rare-Earth Iron Garnets

Abstract: The Faraday Rotation of YIG, GdIG, and TbIG has been measured at 1.15 μ as a function of temperature between 100° and 450°K. The rotation has been analysed in terms of electric and magnetic dipole contributions from the various sublattices (Fe3+ octahedral and tetrahedral, and Re3+), and the contributions separated by a least-squares fit to magnetization data taken from published NMR results. (Both magnetic and electric contributions from an ion are proportional to the ionic magnetic moment). The electric dipo… Show more

“…As magnetic insulators, rare-earth iron garnets (R 3 Fe 5 O 12 ) or RIG constitute an important class of materials, which are promising for technological applications such as magnetic recording devices with giant magnetorestriction 1 , spin Seebeck insulators for thermoelectric generation 2 , microwave devices based on currentinduced spin torque resonance 3 , and Faraday rotators in optical telecommunications 4 . These systems are known to have two different types of Fe ions, namely experiencing a tetrahedral versus octahedral coordination environment ( Fig.…”

“…we will show that (TbBi)3FeS012 and ('!bLaBi)3FeS012 films are exllent in temperature charactaristics for an optical isolator at both 1.3 f.i.m and 0.8 f.i.m wavelength regions. (7), [8] In addition w= report the results of rreasurerrents of their saturation magnetization and optical transparency which are important characteristics for an optical isolator.…”
