Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopy. II. Analytical Applications

Abstract: One of the prime requirements for the use of a spectral region for analytical purposes is a library of reference spectra. Since no adequate libraries exist, the literature since 1941 has been indexed and references to spectra are listed by empirical formula. The few published analytical applications of far ultraviolet spectroscopy are discussed. With the commercial spectrophotometers that are now available it seems certain that the analysts will make frequent use of this region in the future

“…Even at the highest-purity, commercially available, alkane fluids exhibit a strong UV absorbance due to impurities. Three purification methods, acid wash, 7 column chromatography, 9 and distillation, were used to decrease the concentration of impurities. Each fluid was purified with at least one of these methods until the absorbance was minimized and constant with respect to further purification.…”

“…The first advertisement appeared in the September 25,1941, issue of the News Edition of the American Chemical Society. By the end of 1941, 18 instruments had been delivered; in the first six months of 1942, 54 instruments were delivered. For a small company (gross sales of $168 000 in 1940), this was a heady rise in business.…”

“…The availability of Nester lamps with lithium fluoride windows (G. Faust, Exton, Pa.) has materially aided in this push to shorter wavelengths. An extensive review, containing 256 references, on the analytical aspects of the vacuum ultraviolet region, was prepared by Kaye (71); part of this also appeared as a special publication of the ASTM (70) which covered the spectroscopy conference at San Francisco, Calif., October 12 to 15, 1959 Wil-kinson (163) reviewed "Molecular Spectra in the Vacuum Ultraviolet," including references. "Solar Spectroscopy in the Vacuum Ultraviolet" was the subject of a review by Tousey (148), who also discussed "Solar Research from Rockets" (149).…”
