Far‐Right Framing Processes on Social Media: The Case of the Canadian and Quebec Chapters of Soldiers of Odin

Abstract: In recent years, Canada has witnessed an increase in visibility of far‐right groups and activities. This phenomenon is particularly interesting as it contrasts with the broader Canadian context of acceptance of immigrants and support for multiculturalism. How do far‐right groups represent themselves and their claims to the public considering the dominant discursive environment in which they operate? Moreover, are far‐right groups’ discourse and rhetoric marked by contextual differences? This paper analyzes the… Show more

“…In sum, we believe that these findings have implications that go beyond the study of (far-right) social movements and apply to all scholars interested in understanding how political communication processes affect politics and society. In this regard, we hope that our empirical study of far-right protest mobilization paves the way to a broader research agenda expanding the proposed framework theoretically—integrating mechanisms of coverage in hybrid media environments—and empirically—expanding the scope beyond Europe and the far right (Gagnon, 2020; Weiner & Zellman, 2022). Given the growing visibility of far-right contentious action, exemplified by the 2021 storming of the US Capitol building, anti-containment protests and the 2023 Brazilian congress attack (Hunger et al, 2023), the FARPE data is set to play a major role in this research agenda.…”

“…The Soldiers of Odin formed vigilante anti-immigration and anti-Muslim “safety” patrols that roamed the streets of Quebec City while La Meute, another homegrown anti-immigration group, organized anti-refugee protests at the border. As a result of years of refugee containment and erasure, asylum seekers were confronted with a growing ignorance and hostility that can still be felt today and which scholars have only started to unpack (Gagnon, 2020).…”
