Far Infrared Irradiation Enhances Nutraceutical Compounds and Antioxidant Properties in Angelica gigas Nakai Powder

Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of far infrared irradiation (FIR) on nutraceutical compounds, viz. total phenolic content, total flavonoids, and antioxidant capacity, of Angelica gigas Nakai (AGN). The FIR treatment was applied for 30 min with varied temperatures of 120, 140, 160, 180, 200, 220, and 240 °C. Results showed that FIR increased total phenolic and flavonoid content in AGN at 220 °C. The HPLC results revealed higher quantities of decursin (62.48 mg/g) and decursinol angelate (41.… Show more

“…Brennan et al [58] reported that extrusion may improve the bioavailability of bioactive compounds by forming complexes with proteins, thus yielding an increased level of antioxidant activity in the human body. Studies have reported that the trends of antioxidant activity are generally similar to those of phenolic content [1,59]. This has supported the changes in phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity in this study.…”

“…Angelica gigas Nakai (AGN) is a traditional herbal medicine which has also been used as a functional food in Korea since ancient times. It is well recognized that AGN possesses several nutraceutical compounds which have strong antioxidant capacities [1]. AGN also has numerous pharmacological properties such as the ability to cure menopausal syndromes, anemia, and abdominal pain, in addition to the ability to inhibit breast cancer and amenorrhea [2,3].…”

“…The results indicated that the optimal conditions for the IF polyphenolic extraction from A. gigas Nakai were at 220 • C for 30 min [43]. In addition, HPLC analysis showed that the main polyphenols found in the A. gigas Nakai extract were decursin and decursinol angelate [43].…”

“…Moreover, the B. orellana seed extract isolated by MAE had higher antioxidant activity and polyphenolic yield than that isolated by leaching [42]. Another "green extraction method," far IF, was used by Azad et al [43] in order to isolate antioxidant polyphenolic compounds from Angelica gigas Nakai. The results indicated that the optimal conditions for the IF polyphenolic extraction from A. gigas Nakai were at 220 • C for 30 min [43].…”
